Ah, I see. Sorry that wasn’t clear. Yes, Darlene is currently still in Culadasa’s teacher training program, although she does not solely teach from a Mind Illuminated perspective.

As a policy, we’re not going to hold the misconduct of a teacher against their students. When invited here they will be assessed on their own merits and fitness to teach. We also feel it’s important that everyone who thinks about coming on retreat here has the information they need to make a decision that’s right for them. In our announcements regarding teachers in residence, we will be sure to include any completed certifications/authorizations they have received, or any training programs they are currently a part of. There may also be teachers who did study with Culadasa in the past but chose not to complete the program or pursue authorization. It will be up to those teachers whether or not they wish that information to be included in their bio.

Thanks for helping us clarify that!

    Hello!

We are still in the process of defining the direction of the organization and, by extension, the retreat center. We will be working on expanding the pool of resident teachers to include those from other traditions and teaching backgrounds. That being said, TMI-trained teachers will continue to make up at least part of that pool for the foreseeable future.

When resident teachers are announced, we will provide information on their training and certification so that folks can see if they would be a good fit. We are also experimenting with allowing the option of individual retreatants to have remote meditation interviews with their own teacher while here.

    Hope that helps!

Just to insert my 2 cents here… I think it’s useful to make the distinction between the discriminating mind and discernment. The former is what you seem to be talking about with regard to the judgments which springboard into proliferative thoughts and stories about good/bad, etc. Discernment is a function of wisdom. Wholesome and unwholesome in the Buddhist sense isn’t about right and wrong (I personally prefer the terms skillful and unskillful in order to avoid potential baggage around the wholesomeness terms). With any thought, action, communication one engages in, one can ask, “Does this lead in the direction of peace/nibbana? Or does this lead towards suffering?” That is discernment – the ability to tell the difference between these two, which then leads the questioner towards peace as opposed to suffering more and more over time.

In TMI terms I believe that this discernment is a natural outgrowth of the development of metacognitive introspective awareness.

    Hi Tim!

I think Frédéric’s suggestion is a good one. You might also consider trying standing or walking meditation in the evening, if you haven’t already. It’s a bit more difficult to nod off with those. 🙂 There are some basic directions for walking meditation in the TMI book – Appendix A.

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Becky!

Have you found the teacher listing and contact info page yet?

    https://dharmatreasure.org/teachers-in-training/

I think that link and this forum are good starting points to begin an interaction with various teachers. You can peruse the list at the link and reach out to anyone with contact info available. I was just reminded that I need to get my own bio up, but I’m one of those new teacher types you mentioned. 🙂 I’d be happy to talk with you about some sort of mentoring arrangement, as would others I’m sure. Different teachers will structure it differently, opting for either a set fee or dana. I’m in the set fee camp, but it can be reduced depending on circumstances – super flexible. I’m currently disabled myself so I know what it’s like to live on a fixed income.

As for other ways of interacting, I’m part of a task force that came together to develop tools and resources for TMI teachers and students. One of the project areas is Community Development, looking at ideas to build and enhance learning communities such as teacher-to-teacher and student-to-student peer groups. That work will be ramping up in the coming weeks so if you would like to be a part of it, drop me a line and let me know. You can email me directly at smdiiorio@gmail.com.

    Best,
